National Housing Corporation is in the process of putting up a plant to manufacture building materials at a cost of Sh700 million.

The plant, which will produce industrial – floor, walls and roofing panels – is part of the State corporation’s strategy of providing quality housing, fast and at an affordable price.

“We have signed the contract with the manufacturers of the plant and equipment. We will soon start the design and the construction will start by the end of this year,” the corporation’s managing director James Ruitha, said on Monday.

He said the plant could be up and running by mid next year.

“Our technical team is negotiating the design plans with the Mavoko Municipality,” he said after signing a memorandum of understanding with Mahun Company of Iran.

Under the MoU, whose details will be discussed further, NHC will provide land and technical experts while the Iranian firm will provide between Sh5 billion and Sh6 billion in short-term funding to build 2,000-3,000 housing units.

The agreement, which will see the corporation and Mahun form a joint venture to oversee the implementation of the project, is part of the various protocols the Kenyan and Iranian governments signed in 2007.
